Replica 1614 Atocha astrolabe
Replica of historic Atocha Astrolabe in brass
Product details: Replica 1614 Atocha astrolabe | | Quadrant & Astrolabe | Navigation | Material: Brass
I do not normally buy replica's, but where the antique astronomic navigation instruments are concerned and one has not won the lottery it is the only way of getting something looking like it. So when this one came up for sale I immediately bought it. There was not much history associated with it but a bit later a similar one came up for sale on ebay (of which I used two photographs - if I'm annoying somebody, tell me and they will come down) showing photographs of the original astrolabe being reproduced as a plaster model as well as an original sales slip indicating it may be one of six. It could howver also be a completely different replica of the same instrument. The replica is very lifelike and coud probably be used (have not tried that yet) but I doubt it will be accurate as the casting process and (I guess) later reopening of the pinholes will not have lead to a very accurate instrument. It is however fully functional and very heavy.
