50$ Lost then found astrolabe coin
Canadian 50$ silver dollar coin 'Lost and found'
Took me a while to decide to add this coin to the collection. I am not a coin collector but the astrolabe design finally pulled me over. One of the more expensive coins in my collection I was very pleased with it when it arrived. The so-called Cobden astrolabe (said to be Champlain's) is 32 mm big and lying on top of the coins. It cannot rotate but gives the coin a lovely feel. You wouldn't want to put it in your wallet though... The original astrolabe was one of the smaller ones, created in Honfleur, France and dates to 1603. It is unsure if it truly belonged to de Champlain but it was found near the route he travelled (but so did the missionaries).
Engraved on the reverse of the coin is a fine 1632 map of a part of Canada or Nouvelle France by Samuel de Champlain. The map shows vessels but also small villages. The photographs of the coin face were taken using a 10x microscope which, with the camera on top equate to around 15x of magnification. The photographs show the amazing detail, even considering that the entire coin is huge (65 mm diameter).
