Medal le sextant
French medal le sextant
This french coin / medal is almost worn down and was probably a souvenir at some point in time. On the obverse a navigator is shown taking a sextant sight. On the reverse a text can be deciphered which reads "realise en 1757 d'apres une invention de John Hadley datant 1731 le sextant etait un appareil qui respondait exactement aux besoin des marins". Or, "realized in 1757 after an invention by John Hadley dated 1731 the sextant is an apparatus exactly fitting the requirements of sailors".
What is interesting is that the sextant was actually created in 1759 by John Bird as a response to the request of John Campbell for an instrument better than the reflecting circle created in... 1757... The 1731 is correct for John Hadley's octant which is essentially the same type of instrument but constructed generally of wood and with a measuring range up to 90 degrees rather than the 120 degrees of a sextant.
