This is probably the worst made replica in my collection. It is fully non-functional and made as a show piece rather than with a working instrument in mind. However, it is the best I have for showing the functioning of a backstaff. A colleque of mine, Nicolas de Hilster, actually makes nice reproductions / copies (working items rather than these show pieces) of the backstaff and other wooden navigation instruments.and has actually used them to test their functioning for his Phd thesis. Compare his copy of the same backstaff with my replica and see the differences: de Hilster and the original in the Royal Museum in Greenwich: RMG
Besides having used the incorrect wood and the missing sight vane on mine, the main difference is in the scales and overall construction.
