Geoffrey Watt drawing chest
Drawing chest marked Geoffrey Watt
Obtained from the UK
This is a chest that folds out to create a small desk. The chest has a leather inlay and a number of compartments. On the thin side it has a large (but shallow) compartment that locks with a small latch. On the 'thick' side it can hold two square ink bottles and some drawing tools in a hollwed out container. Underneath the hollowed out container is another small storage whereas the top folds to show a large compartment for storing the main drawing tools.
This type of chest was used in the field for making drawings. This type of chest was used by surveyors but also by architects. This chest belonged to a Geoffey Watt from Hull according to the brass plate that came with it. Unfortunately I have not been able to find much information about the previous owner. The best information is a man of that name born in 1891 who died in 1982. His son, John Geoffrey Watts, is listed as a former director of the Humberside Land Company involved in selling and letting real estate since 1864 (originally under the name HULL AND EAST RIDING LAND MORTGAGE AND INVESTMENT COMPANY LIMITED).
