Product details: Brunton pockit transit | Wm. Ainsworth and Sons | Magnetic compasses | Survey | Material: Aluminium
The orginal pocket transit compass, usually just referred to as the 'Brunton' is a classic. The instrument was developed by D.W. Brunton in 1894. The instrument combines all the different field instruments in a single package. It has a magnetic compass that can be adjusted for variation. The compass has a set of sights allowing it to be used as an aiming compass. The instrument also has a bubble level for positioning the instrument (or an object) horizontally. The horizontal bubble also allows crude height measurements to be taken using the sights. Finally it has a clinometer build in allowing the measurement of vetical angles in degrees.
This instrument was made by W. Ainsworth and Sons, a company that became Ainsworth Inc. Based on the pockit transit serial project this instrument was manufactured between 1946 and 1972. So far the highest registered serial is 113600 putting this instrument sowhere in the mid 1960s.
