Observator stop watch
Observator stop watch, obtained from the Netherlands
This observator stop watch states 'Swiss' so was probably rebranded by Observator and sold to accompany one of its sextants. The stopwatch would have been used to time astronomical observations; a common method being to start the watch from the ships chronometer and then read consecutive sextant angles (noting the stopwatch time). This would allow the ships chronometer to stay in a safe location while transporting its time to the deck observations. The watch allows the user to read to 0.1 second over a total interval of 15 minutes; more than long enough for a regular series of observations.
