George Steele grandfather clock
George Steele Grandfather clock. Obtained from the Netherlands
We bought this clock because there wasn't a grandfather clock in the collection yet. This one got our interest because it has a makers name (George Steele of Chester le Street) ánd because it had both a second and a date hand. After finding a good spot for the clock in our hallway we got it to run and chime. The big disappointment was the date hand; this not moved with the clockwork but one must move it oneself... 19th century automation at work...Apart from that the clock is in decent condition with a nice painted front.
Some research at clockswatches.co.uk has shown that there was a George Steele working in Chester-le-Street around 1850. A clock similar to ours is shown in the directory showing a similar signature.
