This is a toy transit on a tripod as an accesoire to the G.I. Joe puppet just like the sextant also in my collection. But where the sextant is much flawed, this instrument is quite accurate altough not to scale. It is modeled after a standard transit like the Keuffel and Esser in my collection. It has a working magnetic compass and a plumb line.
I actually bought two tripods by mistake. One was advertised as a GI joe compass on a tripod, the other as a (replica) transit. Upon arrival the transit and compass are the same; but with the (original) compass the telescope is broken of. I missed out on that in the ad (which said it anyway). So now the tripod with the transit is original as is the 'compass' on the newer (brighter) reproduction tripod.
The puppet is not a G.I. Joe puppet but rather a (cheap) copy that I received as a Sinterklaas present when I was young. My mother sowed a number of outfits for that puppet which I retained. Now a part of that outfit (the lumberjack one) is in use again demonstrating the transit.
