Gutenschon balloon octant
Balloon octant with level by George Butenschon
Obtained from the Netherlands
Product details: Gutenschon balloon octant | Butenschon | Clinometer | | Material: Brass
Marketed as an air octant this device is actually a large clinometer. It was used however as a quadrant or sextant for measuring the altitude of stars. It functions as a clinometer however. It has a small level that is visible through the sight tube. By rotating the telescope along the scale the level can be brought into coincidence with the object and the angle read. The level can be lighted using a small bulb and batteries in the handle.
