This is a plan parallel plate micrometer which can be fitted to the NT1, T21 and T16 theodolites but also to the N(K)2 and the NA1 levels. The plan parallel plate micrometer allows the line of sight to be moved up / down while registering the amount of movement applied from the micrometer. This especially usefull in levelling and as such would ideally require the theodolite to be equipped with the telescope level. The micrometer has a slot which fits the sight on the telescope positioning it exactly straight up ór at straight angles allowing sideways movements to be measured as well.
