C. Plath Artificial bubble horizon
C.Plath Artificial bubble horizon for navigation sextant
Obtained from Belgium
The C.Plath artificial horizon was created to allow measurements at dusk or night when there is no horizon visible. This is the old type and is probably the best of those produced by C.Plath. This one has the variable illumination as well as a knob for varying bubble size. It works the same way as the aircraft bubble sextants but rather than having only 90 degrees, these fit on any standard Plath (or Freiberger or Tamaya) sextant. The light in the bubble unit is powered from the standard battery in the handle also used for the scale lighting.
When I got this unit the bubble was not in shape but thanks to the Sextantbook I figured out how to get the bubble in shape again. A few vigorous nods and shakes brought the bubble back in order. The lighting (red) is also still in shape and to put it short, it is in perfect working condition (as is the sextant it is mounted on).
