The plan parallel plate micrometer is a thick piece of optical glass with parallel surfaces. By rotating it the glass displaces the rays of light allowing the image to shift up or down. By measuring the amount the image is shifted up or down very precise measurements can be taken. This GPM3 was obtained together with the NA2 on which it is shown.
