Astromedia Sextant
Paper model of an Octant / sextant with an artificial horizon
Product details: Astromedia Sextant | Astromedia Verlag | Octant | Home / hobby | Material: Paper
One of the more elaborate models of Astromedia, this took about as much time to build as the astrolabium also in my collection. It is called a sextant but technically is an Octant as it only measures up to around a 100 degrees. It is designed after a ca 1900s instrument. It is equpped with a vernier allowing it to be read to minutes and estimated to about a third of that. It also has a (single) plastic filter allowing solar observations. The mirrors are aluminium and easily become undone with use (as mine have - I have an unopened set as well). Finally I also bought the optional artificial horizon which essentially consists of an additional mirror and a levelling vial. The vial is visible through the horizon mirror and shows the bubble overlaying the image from the index mirror.
