This is a very small survey sextant from Sweden. The maker, G.W. Lyth from Stockholm provided nautical instruments but not much is known about this maker. Most other instruments seem to date between 1880 and the mid 20th century. This instrument is designed as survey sextant and only has 'upward' legs. The material is strange and the scale is made of a metal that rusts (probably steel). However, it also seems that the scale was at one point in time 'brass' plated. Other parts of the instrument are clearly brass.

The set-up of the instrument is in line with the existence of the maker with the index mirror adjustment designed as a cross-over between a box sextant and a traditional sextant. The index mirror is adjusted using a double screw. The key for this is not, as with other sextants, separate in the box but is screwed into the frame, just as with a box sextant.

The sextant itself does not have an engraved serial number, but there is a paper sticker in the box (probably dating from somewhere in the mid 20th century?). On the sticker in the box a hand-written serial or inventory number is shown along with one that is crossed out. On the same label a very faint printing can be seen saying 'xxationsskolan' and 'goteborg' indicating that this was once the property of some school in Goteborg, Sweden. So far I have not been able to identify which school that may have been. Goteborg has a technical university where geodesy is taught (and maritime studies), however no name or former name seems to match the label so far.
