Stanley Hezzanith survey sextant
Stanley London survey sextant.
This survey sextant from Stanley is probably from around the time when Heath became part of Stanley. Its serial is very close to an instrument from 1935, however it is stamped Stanley rather than Heath. Heath was the inventor of the Hezzanith endless tangent screw as found on this instrument. Where earlier sextants using this patent were made by Heath, that company was absorbed into Stanley London in 1937.
It still feels strange that the endless tangent screw was still in use at this late stage. Plath has created the drum sextant much earlier although vernier sextants were still in use until after WWII. The instrument itself looks rather standard although the telescope is missing. The fixture of. the horizon mirror is rather clunky especially considering that the adjustments seem to be made via the mirrors.
