Welch Scientific education sextant
Welch Scientific educational sextant
Product details: Welch Scientific education sextant | Welch Scientific Company | Sextant | Education | Material: Steel
A small, all metal training sextant this one was deemed 'unusable' by my students. At some point in time I brought all my (then) educational sextants to school to have the students test them. This one they couldn't even properly test; for one because the horizon mirror kept getting loose but also because the black on black scale is unreadable. There are 10! shades for the index mirror and none for the horizon. The 10 for the index mirror are al made of a very flimsy plastic and only using all of them together will block out the sun. There is a level attached to the sighting tube which could have been a nice addition but as there is no extra mirror to actually see it, is totally unusable unless you observer with two persons. All in all, not a very good design. Still there are more than a few to be had on ebay, so it must have sold really well compared to other education sextants. Probably the price point was very low.
