This tide gauge (or rather the recorder of a tide gauge) was in use with the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz until it ran out of paper (a common problem with older equipment). As a result it was not longer usable and ended up in my collection. The float (wire) is guided over a set of pulleys to the recorder where it drives a pen left-right across the recorder. The paper is moved forward by an electric motor (timed using a clock) to make the trace on the paper.
