These rods are for staking out and are normally set up in corners or other important points of a construction work. They are staked using either a theodolite or just using an optical square. On soft ground they are pushed into the ground with their spear like tip. On hard surfaces such as tarmac or stone a small tripod as shown is used. The tripod is nothing more than a couple of steel wires connected to ring with a screw for tightening the rod. It is surprisingly stable though with the rod as its fourth leg.
