The Gunter scale was essentially an early slide rule. However, there is no sliding part. A pair of compasses would be used to actually take / transfer the measurements. It has however a logarithmic scale as well as various other scales. This 2 foot Gunter scale has all the various scales that would have been used in navigation / navigational computations. The rule is in excellent condition and made of boxwood.

It is hard to date as their is no maker other than 'Norway'. I bought this from John Vossepoel who, as an expert on this type of instrument, dates it to the late 19th century, possibly mid 19th century.
