This is one of those novelty instruments that were designed with the best of ideas in mind but failed in the real wold. The pelorus was designed as a combination of angle measuring pelorus and a computational device allowing such things as speed and course made good to be read directly. Probably its main drawback was that it had to be positioned against a part of the vessel aligned with the heading and then still needed a view of the outside world. For computation it is not very accurate and a good map, a pair of dividers and a captain fields protractor can do the same job (and more). This unit has the optional mahogany box which is slightly damaged. The original manual and tables are still there and the instrument could be used if required.
