Hughes Course-Speed indicator Mk II
Hughes Course-Speed indicator Mk II
Obtained from the UK
This instrument is used to compute the course and effective air speed with regard to the wind. It is a nifty device; first the speed of the aircraft is set by sliding the entire assembly (disc) up or down. Then the (theoretical) airspeed is set with the small pin in the middle of the disc. Finally the disc is rotated to indicate the direction of the wind relative to the direction of travel. The amount of drift is then indicated on top of the disc while the effective airspeed is indcated on the ruler in the centre.
The principle of the device is quite simple with two pivot points; one on top of the device for the long slider and the other the speed pin on the disc. The disc can be used for drawing allowing a graphical representation of the aircraft track. On the backside of the instrument there is a simple calculator to convert distance to time with the given speed or vice versa.
