This is probably the oldest instrument in my collection. Heath and Wing were London instrument makers between 1751 and 1773 dating this instrument somewhere within that 20 year period. Assuming it is a late model it is still 250 years old. The box is showing that age but the pantograph itself is still very much functional.

The pantograph was developed (by amongst others Heath and Wing) to reduce or enlarge a drawing. For this there are settings on the various arms, one for setting the pivot point (at the weight) and one for setting the pencil / pin (arm next to the weight). Missing from my insrument is the brass pin for follwing the original. The ivory wheels are still OK and the spindle still has the wire for keeping the set-up taut.

The company (and its predecessor) published a booklet on how to use the pantograph.
