RGA Box sextant
Box sextant (without maker)
I obtained this box sextant together with the artificial (glass) horizon. No idea if they were used togehter but they are from the same era. The sextant is similar to the others in my collection and not very special other than that it has a telescope which is relatively rare. Although there is no makers mark the case is marked with a previous owner. In this case 'E.G. Hart RGA'. A little research shows that it was probably owned by Captain E.G. Hart of the Royal Garrison Artillery, a part of the British Army operational from 1899 untill 1924. Army records show a captain E.G. Hart in the RGA from 1902.
The RGA was the part of the artillery responsible for many innovations including the use of landsurveying for aiming the artillery. As such finding a box sextant belonging to an RGA officer is not strange. Its probably use has been in field surveying. The instrument is well used but still working.
