Cary HO25 Survey sextant
Small Cary of London survey sextant
Product details: Cary HO25 Survey sextant | Cary | Quintant | Survey | Material: Brass
A small, undated, survey sextant (technically a quadrant) labeled Cary of London. The sextant shows the broad arrow as well as the HO25 mark inscribed showing its origin as a survey (or sounding) sextant from the UK Hydrograpic Office. The box is marked KCN but I'm unclear what that refers to. The scale is engraved in the brass limb and reads untill 170 degrees and it has a vernier reading in minutes. As the scale reads to almost 180 degrees it is almost a quadrant (2*90 degrees) or a large quintant. It has a relatively modern telescope and came with a number of differently coloured filter glasses. The mirrors are round and are sealed.
The box is also marked KCN but I have no idea what those letters stand for. Also the date of the sextant is a bit of a mystery. Though it has a low HO number which indicates late 19th century based on similar instruments found at Greenwich. A similar instrument from Cary is portrayed in J.A Bennett the divided circle where it is labeled a sounding sextant from the 19th century. However, any further information is welcome.
