C. Bamberg sextant
C. Bamberg night / survey sextant.
Obtained from Belgium.
Carl Bamberg (which was later part of Askania) made this instrument. The instrument is stamped with both a serial as well as a D.R.G.M. or Deutsche Reichs Gebrauchs Muster code (D.R.G.M. 631671 / 3). The DRGM was sort of a trademark copyright which offered less protection but was also less expensive than a patent. Unfortunately the records for the DRGM codes until 1934 have been lost but a best estimate put this instrument around 1914.
The instrument deviates from regular night / survey sextants (I am still uncertain which of the two this is) in that it has a full metal cover over the mirrors and index arm. Possibly to keep out as much light as possible (which might indicate a night sextant rather than a survey sextant?). Underneath the metal cover the instrument is basically a standard sextant without index and horizon shades. Instead there are two shades present in front of the telescope. The shades in front of the telescope are coloured orange and grey. Based on these shades the instrument seems more of a night sextant than a survey sextant. The design was probably not very useful (the instrument becomes quite heavy with it) as I have not seen any others of this design.
