Heath survey sextant
Heath 'Hezzanith' survey sextant Obtained from the UK
Product details: Heath survey sextant | Heath and Co | Quintant | Survey | Material: Aluminium
The Heath survey sextant (quintant) is from the same era and for the same use as the (Kelvin and) Hughes MkIII survey sextant. It is also along a similar design being a drum sextant with sealed mirrors. The index mirror cannot be adjusted, the horizon mirror can be adjusted for both side error as well as index error. It features a low power, high resolution telescope which takes a coloured filter. The mechanism to disengage the worm from the rack is no longer the classic Hezzanith 'push button' type but rather the more standard two clip that is also used by C.Plath in their sextants.
The last one I obtianed also has a prism with it. Like the earlier Hughes I have, the prism is mounted directly in front of the telescope rather than before the index mirror. The mounting mechanism involves a spring mechnism on both feet to secure it to the frame. This is also the first prism that I have that actually comes with adjustment numbers. Rather than being 90 degrees, this one is 89 degrees and 46 minutes according to the engraving.
