Ebbco vernier sextant
Early Ebbco plastic vernier sextant.
Product details: Ebbco vernier sextant | Ebbco | Sextant | Navigation | Material: Plastic
This is a very rare Ebbco vernier sextant. Different from all the others it does have a drum to make fine adjustments but is read using a vernier scale. This is most probably the answer from Ebbco to the Davis MkIII for which they were dealer for a while. The instrument has a better construction than the MkIII or even the Mk12. The drum is not the best solution but having the vernier means it does really matter how well it works for reading it. The filters are made of coloured sturdy plastic, not like later filters that are flimsy. The main disadvantage of the thicker filters is that they must be molded correctly which must have been more expensive than the later thin filters. This one came with a box that also differed from those of later Ebbco sextants. A photograph of the box will follow.
