Ilon Mark III pocket sextant
Ilon Mark 3 pocket drum sextant
Product details: Ilon Mark III pocket sextant | Ilon Industries | Sextant | Navigation | Material: Aluminium
This is the smallest drum sextant in my collection. It is also arguably the best small sextant in my collection. It is slightly smaller than my box sextants but much easier to use. The instrument is complete with a telescope, sight tube, filter, adjustment key and the handle. The handle detaches in a rather awkward way but is easier to handle than the metal rings on the Mark 1. The only disadvantage with the instrument are the coloured index filters. When used in 'astronomic' mode they stay in place but as I demonstrate the instrument often in coastal navigation mode (i.e. horizontal) the filters keep dropping from their slots.
Otherwise every small details seems to have been thought about. The scale is covered by an arced plastic window allow a mangification; the drum has a clear 2 minute reading on it (granted, not as accurate as the larger sextants, but still...) and the filters for the horizon and index are all there. The telescope can be adjusted for those wearing glasses and to top it of there is a separate filter for the sighting tube.
