Davis Mk15 Master sextant
Plastic drum sextant; successor to the Mk12 sextant
Product details: Davis Mk15 Master sextant | Davis Instruments | Sextant | Home / hobby | Material: Plastic
The Mk15 is an attempt by Davis to create a plastic version of a brass sextant. It has a drum which drives a metal worm with the teeth cast into the plastic rim. However, as one can imagine having a metal on plastic gear is not very good for the plastic. Within a short time these sextants start to get some play and get the worse for it. It does come with lightning as a standard.
Personally I like the MkIII or Mk12 much better where plastic sextants are concerned. They are simple and just do what needs to be done rather than trying to pretend to be something they are not. The Mk15 can still be bought. They are good for training as they have all the adjustments in a package and one doesn't feel as bad when mishandling it. A good second hand Freiberger or similar doesn't however set you back much more than the cost of one of these.
