Davis Mk25 De luxe sextant
Top model plastic sextant by Davis.
Product details: Davis Mk25 De luxe sextant | Davis Instruments | Sextant | Home / hobby | Material: Plastic
This is the so-called 'beam converger' sextant. Other than its grey colour and the special horizon mirror it is the same as the Mk15. The beam converger mirror is a special mirror of which the bottom part is semi-transparent allowing the horizon ánd the index mirror reflection to be seen together. This makes overlapping the images easier. Research by Celestair has however shown that in regular circumstances it does work but is not a real benefit whereas in difficult situations too much light is lost. Apart from this, everyting said about the Mk15 is also valid for the Mk25. One model that I never bothered to buy is the Mk20 which is essentially a black coloured Mk25 (or a Mk15 with a beam converger). It was on the market only for a short time after which the Mk25 came around that replaced it.
I obtained this one not so much for the sextant itself (although it is fun to play with the beam converger) but rather for the accesoire that came with it. This one had a prism level that tells you if the sextant is held exactly upright.
