Ilon Mark 1
Ilon Industries Mark 1 pocket sextant
Product details: Ilon Mark 1 | Ilon Industries | Sextant | Navigation | Material: Aluminium
This is probably one of the rarest sextants in my collection. The Mark 3 is hardly ever seen, but so far this is the only Mark 1 that I know about. It is not a very good sextant though as the index arm is directly moved by sliding it and no slow motion control is available. In that respect it works similarly to the Paget angle sextant or the Davis Mk II / III. However as it is much smaller in size it is even harder to manipulate the index arm correctly.
Instead of a handle, Ilon has opted to go with two metal rings. Those do work but are not the most comfortable handles. There is a shade for the pinhole (no telescope supplied) and two filter glasses for the index mirror. From that perspective it is well equipped. The sextant came in its original cardboard box with the seahorse logo of Ilon industries. Those who look carefully at my logo will see a strong resemblance as I've taken the idea one step further to create my own logo.
