Freiberger drum sextant
Product details: Freiberger drum sextant | VEB Freiberger | Sextant | Navigation | Material: Aluminium
This must be one of the original Freiberger sextants as it has a relatively low serial, the old colour (hammered green) and the latch on the 'wrong' side of the drum. The green colour was used in the early days and was later replaced by the standard grey colour that most Freiberger sextants are coloured. The more modern may be white, black or blue (as my other one is) but the green colour has not been used since the mid 1960's.
The most curious on this model is the placement of the drum release latch. Whereas on the very similar SNO-T as well as later Freibergers it is located on the front, near the drum itself, on this model it is placed near the rear. That configuration is however not only in this very early model; I have seen mid '70s models that have it in the same place.
The sextant is made untill this day. For those looking for a good and affordable second hand there are plenty of the available. For those looking for a repair manual, Bill Morris in New Zealand (of the Sextantbook) has an excellent manual how to take these apart.
