de Koningh drum survey sextant
Survey sextant by G. de Koningh.
Product details: de Koningh drum survey sextant | de Koningh | Sextant | Survey | Material: Brass
This is actually a sextant, rather than the over 170 degrees of its predecessor and the 140 degrees of its successor. It also has the smaller telescope. The frame however superficially looks much the same as that of the later model but without the rounded edges. The instrument is actually marked 'sounding sextant' in Dutch ('Lodingssextant') indicating its use. The instrument is actually only one serial (5566) apart from a similar sextant listed as a Lodingssextant by the Naval Museum in Den Helder form the survey vessel 'Snellius'. This would indicate that this one is most probably also a former Royal Netherlands Navy Hydrographic Service sounding sextant. The year also matches the launch of the Snellius making it even more probable that this one was part of batch purchased to equip the sounding launches for that vessel (two sextants are required per vessel).
