Chesterfield Gunter chain
66ft Chesterfiled Gunter chain
Obtained from the UK
I already had a metric chain in my collection but not the chain that measured the world (or at least a large part thereof). So when this relatively modern Gunter chain came up for auction I could not resist it. This one is probably from the 1960's or 1970's and was, according to a label on the box, used for setting out cricket pitches. It has different markings for 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 links (with 60 - 90 the same in opposite direction). The start and end have a straight handle whereas the 50 links point is marked with the makers name.
The chain is in decent shape and is now used to confuse our first year students. With a length of 66ft divided over 100 links each link is slightly over 20 cm long (to be more precise 20.1 cm). Over a short distance that is almost metric, for one chain it differs by 10 cm, quite significant. It teaches the students about (different) units as they will use the metric chain (and tape) after this one.
