Chart compasses
Various chart compasses
Shown are four different types of chart compasses. They differ from 'regular' compasses in that they have two points rather than a point and a pen or pencil. They are used for plotting positions and lengths on a nautical chart. The simple one was part of a Davis navigation kit; the three steel and brass ones are the more regular type. Two were used by me during my nautical studies whereas one is a replica of the one used in HMS Association (1707). The replica is almost the same as the one I got gifted when I entered nautical college showing how little these changed over almost three centuries.
