Triplex kit sextant
Triplex kit sextant with artificial horizon.
Home built (probably a kit) triplex sextant. The parts are gluid and screwed together. The kit is relatively well thought out and has a sturdy feel to it. The sextant is built in such a way that it can be used in all circumstances; it has a handle for horizontal use as well as a (bubble) artifical horizon as well as an aiming pin behind the horizon mirror. There are two coloured glasses, one for the index mirror and one for the pinhole sight. The scale is marked in degrees with a vernier reading to 5 minutes. The bubble is brought into sight using the secondary mirror beneath the horizon mirror.
The mirrors cannot be adjusted (which is required as there is a large side error in the instrument). Moving the index arm also requires some getting used to as the knob for sliding it is on top of the arm rather than at the end. I have not been able to find any information about this kit. It does seem that a single part is moving from the curved bar above the index as there is a hole and some glue residue.
