Stanley protractor
Stanley London protractor. Obtained from the UK.
Protractor made by Stanley, London. Probably somewhere around 1900. The instrument is made of German silver (a nickel - brass - zinc alloy) with a silver scale. This instrument was used in plotting angles such as from a theodolite. The instrument has four fixed angles (as measured from the glass disc in the centre) at straight angles to each other. The two arms rotate around the same centre and can be set to the nearest 1" using the scale and vernier. Using the two arms small holes can be made in the paper by pressing the arms down on the springs. This allows the plotter to create a direction in the set direction away from the 0, 90, 180 and 270 degree set directions.
