Cottontype MkII Rangefinder
E.R. Watts Cottontype coincidence rangefinder.
Product details: Cottontype MkII Rangefinder | E.R. Watts and Son | Stadimeter | Navigation | Material: Brass
Early model of a coincidence rangefinder. Measures similarly to the Hughes Stuart distancemeter using two pieces of glass, one grounded at an angle, the other plain. By sliding the glass along two images are formed; when the front and stern of e.g. a ship coincide the distance can be read provided the correct height bar has been chosen first. In this it is limited to the available scales.
The object came from the collection of the late Dr. David Moore who both collected and sold optical instruments.
