Ahrend-Reiss traveling level
Product details: Ahrend-Reiss traveling level | R. Reiss | Tilting levels | Survey | Material: Brass
This small level is a cross-over between a hand level and a tilting level. The base of the instrument is a telescope with a small magnification and a cross hair. The level is mounted on the telescope tube and is superimposed not in the image but around it. If the image is exactly surronded by the image of the bubble the instrument is positioned level, a construction that i have not seen before. Most hand levels use a side by side construction rather than this 'image in image'. It does work surprisingly well though. Besides this the instrument is fitted out like a regular tilting level altough the tripod mount is missing in mine; whether this was a tribach or a ball and socket construction is not known; a ball and socket would have been more probable considering the size.
The instrument has a horizontal circle divided into degrees with a vernier divided into minutes. This instrument was originally sold by Ahrend and possibly also designed by them. It is labeled 'Ahrend-Reiss 6500/1' as well as 'R.Reiss G.m.b.h. Liebenwerda' on the tilting bar.
