Garmin GPS50
Garmin GPS50 handheld GPS unit.
Product details: Garmin GPS50 | Garmin | GNSS Receivers | Home / hobby | Material: Plastic
This GPS came up for sale together with a Davis Master sextant. That sextant was already in my collection but the Garmin came at a very reasonable price. Not expecting much I put in fresh (AA) batteries and started it. Lo and behold, it worked except that the memory battery is gone meaning it looses its almanac everytime and requires a very long time to start up. But then it will work (untill switched off). What makes this special is that it is one of the first succesfull handheld GPS units. Back then they cost over 2000 US$ but did everything they were supposed to; give you a position and allow you to navigation (course and speed) to a waypoint. Something your phone now does for a few dollars... It still has the original transport bag but the original manual wasn't with it anymore.
