Thales 3011 GPS Compass
GPS Compass with pitch or roll option by Thales Navigation
The Thales / Magellan Professional / Ashtech 3011 is a GPS compass with optional either pitch or roll (depending in which direction the antenna would be mounted). This unit is the basic version with GPS L1 and HF only and could have been used on for example a dredging vessel or elsewhere where RTK was not required. This unit is equipped with the optional TRM100 display which would give full control over the unit and show both positon and heading information. Due to the HF reception (using the optional HMF5000 antenna) the unit would function as a differential GPS receiver.
The heading accuracy was quoted as 0.5 degree; on a par with other GPS heading sensors but also with the gyrcompasses. The advantage of these type of sensors was that they would give position and heading from a single device without the mechanical components in a regular gyrocompass. The disdadvantage is that they rely on viewing the satellites which may be an issue in harbours or along rivers.
This unit was donated by CT-Systems where it was lying around for scrap as it had ceased functioning. It was part of a larger donation with many other GPS units. The 3011 was not sold often; the concurrent CSI Vector (now Hemisphere) also in my collection is found more often.
