Ashtech Promark 2
Thales / Magellan Professional / Ashtech Promark 2 GPS unit.
The Ashtech Promark 2 looks a lot like the Magellan GPS300 pioneer which is not surprising as they are essentially one and the same. Externally the main differeince to be seen is that four contactpins (power ánd serial) vs the power only of the GPS300. The unit runs on two penlite batteries and is still operational. As a stand alone unit this was no better than the GPS300 and would give meter level accuracy. However, when combined with a geodetic antenna, it was possible to collect raw GPS data with the receiver which could then be post processed into a static solution. The same principle is also found in the Mobilemapper 6 in my collection (which does not have the separate antenna though).
The antenna supplied with the unit is the geodetic Ashtech antenna which is also part of larger and more accurate (RTK) systems. With the optional tribach connector the unit can be set up on a tripod (Wild tribach). Using the supplied H.I. Tape measure the height from the antenna to the ground can then be measured using the 'notch' on the antenna. The tape measure only produces valid heights when used in conjuntion with this antenna as is clearly labeled on the tape measure itself. The whole came in a canvas carry bag.
This unit was donated to my collection (together with a sister unit, allowing kinematic surveys) by CT-Systems as part of a larger donation.
