DSNP Aquarius 5000
DSNP / Thales Aquarius 5000 Real Time Kinematic GPS receiver.
Obtained from the Netherlands
This was at one point in time the mainstay of the Dutch Rijkswaterstaat where Real Time Kinematic was concerned. A large network of Aquarius 5000 receivers was set up in the Netherlands using a 15 km range inland and a 25 km range out to sea. The latter was possible due to the Long Range Kinematic engine provided which, at a cost of reduced accuracy, would allow a range extension. I was part of the original tests to verify which of the then current receivers performed the best in terms of range (accuracy was not tested at that time).
During the Ketelmeer-Oost sanitation project these units were used to provide primary position from two base stations set up locally. Operation was verified by two monitor stations whereas each vessel or dredger was equipped with a unit as well bringing the total number of receivers on that project up to around 10. The base station would be the same receiver as the regular station but with an added UHF module. Programmaing the units was a bit of a nightmare as it had to be done by computer. The screen would only give limited information on the oprational condition.
This unit was at some point in time purchased by GEMS, a Belgian survey contractor. When they were liquidated their equipmenet was auctioned of with this unit ending up in the rental pool of CT-Systems. Due to the GPS millenium (week roll-over) all former Thales / DSNP / Magellan Professional stopped working overnight rendering them useless. As a result it was donated to my collection by CT-Systems.
