F. Barker and Son box sextant
This box sextant is typical for its period (early 20th century). It is essentially the same layout as many others and was manufactured in series, probably the same model being made for many companys who then stamped them with their own brand. This one is interesting for comparison to its much mater modern version, the small craft precision sextant which employed similar methods as this early one.
What is interesting is that this one has surface aluminized mirrors rather than the more traditional silvered mirrors. Surface aluminization prevents irregularities in glass thickness to influence the image and was a technology used in some full size sextants as well.
