midget dumpy level
(very) small dumpy level. Obtained from the US
This is by far the smallest level I have ever seen. The thread on the bottom is 1/4" photography thread rather than the 5/8" on a normal one. The total height is around 5 cm, the length around 12 cm. However, despite its size it is fully operational. The bubble on top is relatively sensitive, there are cross hairs in the instrument and it can levelled using the footscrews. It is aimed using the telescope which has some sort of control in the y-bracked beneath it.
This one is labeled 'Japan', however at the time I bought this one another was also for sale in black and brass without any markings. Other than that the instruments were the same. Besides these two I have not found more information on these. So any additional information is welcome. As they are not marked with a maker they do not seem gifts or salesman samples. Which could mean they were a 'gimmick' at some point in time?
