Cruver Maritime Commission lifeboat sextant
Plastic lifeboat sextant made by Cruver and distributed by the US Maritime Commision
Product details: Cruver Maritime Commission lifeboat sextant | Cruver Mfg Co | Sextant | Navigation | Material: Plastic
This is the original plastic sextant. It was specifically designed for use in lifeboats and as such comes in a suitcase complete with all the relevant navigation tools. Included in the suitcase are besides the sextant a set of pencils, eraser, paper, parallel rule and pair of compasses. And not to forget a complete navigation manual with tables for 1944 and 1945 and all the instructions on how to use them including a star chart. Anybody with the will to master the technique (and the ability to read) could navigate with this kit. The sextant looks very complicated when compared to the later Davis. The complication comes from the way the mirrors are adjusted (although granted, this construction looks much sturdier). It is this sextant that gave its predecessors the adjective 'lifeboat'.
