This is a very small instrument and basically a survey compass with a small vertical telescope. It can measure vertically as well as horizontal although the vertical is not marked in angles but rather in slope (%). Direct reading is to 1 degree, estimates to a fraction of that (between 0.25 and 0.5 degree is possible). The instrument can be levelled using the two levelling screws on the tribach. The third is fixed. The compass rose can be made to move by releasing the yellow lever.
