Product details: Throughton and Simms survey sextant HO135 | Throughton & Simms | Quintant | Survey | Material: Brass
Throughton and Simms are famous makers of sextants. This is an elaborate sextant used by the UK Hydrographic Office and labeled both the broad arrow as well as 'HO135'. The instrument is nicely made with a scale in, as far as I can tell, gold. It came with both a short telescope as well as a pinhole adapter for the rising piece. The telescope is made from aluminium which makes the sextant to be (probably) after 1886 as between 1825 and 1886 aluminium was available but very expensive and mainly used in jewelry. Based on the HO number (and assuming a successive numbering system) the instrument would be from around 1895. It is definitely no later than 1922 (or more probably 1916) as the firm than merged with T.Cooke to become Cooke Troughton and Simms.
