Freiberger drum sextant
Product details: Freiberger drum sextant | VEB Freiberger | Sextant | Survey | Material: Aluminium
A very recent Freiberger drum sextant. It is in blue, a colour that marks a relatively young Freiberger as they were mainly sold in grey. The instrument was sold by Kelvin Hughes Observator in the Netherlands but is obviously a VEB Freibeger and still marked as such on the index arm.
I already had a more modern (grey) Freiberger, but when this one came up it was cheap and I wanted it for parts to restore those used during education. When I picked it up I was sorely disappointed at first as the instrument had obvious sustained heavy damage. It was also mounted on a wooden board. That is, untill I started a conversation and turned the wooden board around. That is when I found that I was speaking to a salvage diver who took part in the salvage of the Boskalis hopper dredge 'Nautilus' after it capsized with three hands lost in Pointe Noire in Congo on November 2006. Having worked with and for Boskalis and remembering that event very well I decided to clean it as far as possible and keep it in my collection. Apart from the telescope which has a calcium crust inside it is working again and is now a proud object in the collection.
